NEK-CAP, Inc. Doniphan County Urgent Needs

Goal: $10,000.00

Specific Need

NEK-CAP, Inc. Urgent Needs Services provides funds to individuals and families through short-term assistance for needs that can quickly become urgent, including rent, utility, medication, small home or vehicle repairs, and identification documents such as drivers license or a birth certificate. Until recently, this program has worked on an emergency-based model to meet needs when an eviction or a utility shutoff notice is received.

  • Starting January 1, 2026, we will be switching to a stabilization model. Applicants will be asked to work with staff for at least 30 days in order to complete a strengths assessment, a financial needs assessment, identify goals towards self-sufficiency, and identify potential budget gaps. During this 30 days, $350 will be set aside for the family to use for their needs in order to prevent a future emergency situation. Funds will still be eligible to be paid towards rent, utilities, etc, with the intention of helping the family to plan ahead instead.
  • Applicants to the program are asked to complete an intake assessment, provide proof of residency in the county, and provide income documentation to determine eligibility. Income eligibility is set at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level for household size.

On average, funds from the Doniphan County Community Foundation's Give Where You Live Match Day has helped to assist 10 families per year with over $2,000 towards needs, most of which have gone towards utility costs. With continued support from donors, NEK-CAP, Inc. hopes to continue serving more families, helping households stay housed and warm, and use funds to prevent urgent situations while also helping to identify strengths and local resources.

All funds raised are used for direct services only and do not cover any administrative costs or staff wages. As a Community Action Action, NEK-CAP, Inc. uses Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to cover operational and staff costs for services in the community, including facilitating this program. For further program or funding questions, please contact the Community Services Director, Belinda Estes, via phone at 785-742-2222, ext 165 or email at bestes@nekcap.org
