The Highland Historical Society is working to restore the St Martha's AME Church in Highland which was build in 1882. The hope to use the Give Where You Live donations to help with much needed electrical work.

Profile

The St. Martha's AME Church in Highland was build in 1882, fulfilling the dream of Martha Hubbard, who was born a slave in 1828. She was sold three times and separated from her children. She and her husband managed to escape from slavery and then settled in Highland, where they later re-united with their children. She died in 1913. The church building was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in July of 2000.  The Highland Historical Society, with support from the Kansas Historical Society and other organizations and individuals, has worked to preserve this building which is so important to the local history of Highland and Doniphan County.
